MGCC Luncheon Presentation "Germany's Capital Region' Brandenburg: Expect the Best for Your Investment, Sentral Ballroom, Hilton KL

The Malaysian - German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MGCC) hosted a luncheon presentation of the latest investment opportunities at the new Brandenburg Airport Region. This luncheon was an initiative of the Brandenburg Economic Development Board (ZAB), which is the State of Brandenburg's central contact point for investors, local companies and technology - oriented start-ups. ZAB works closely with the Investment Bank of the State of Brandenburg ILB (Investitionsbank des Landes Brandenburg) and BC Brandenburg Capital GmbH.

MITRANS was represented by its Director, Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut. Also present at the event were Mr Tobias Krauss (General Manager and CEO of Krauss Aviation Technologies), Datuk Muhammad Feisol Hj Hassan (founding president of the Malaysian - German Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Alana Sim (R & D Manager, EK Hardware DIY (M) Sdn Bhd), Wee Hui Bieh (Managing Director, WENCOM Career Consultancy), Jonest Tan (Director of KWX Corporation, i.e. of Kangaroo Worldwide Express Couriers), Jacquiline Chang (Policy and Project Manager of the EU - Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and other stakeholders of the investment and aviation sector.

Dr Rawindaran Nair's Talk at MITRANS, 8 February 2012

Renowned Maritime Law and Economics Researcher, Dr Rawindaran Nair, from Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, gave a talk at MITRANS on 'Strategic Dynamics Facing the Container Shipping Industry: External Pressures of Operational Costs, Competition Law and Increasing Ship Size'.

The event was held at MITRANS' Seminar Room and a crowd of about 30 participants showed up. MITRANS charged a minimal fee of RM100 for each participant. The charge has to be made as MITRANS moves towards sustainability in its quest for HICOE status.

Dr Rawindaran's presentation explored the strategies adopted by the leading liner shipping companies, using the model of economics of scheduled services within the time frame of the post 2008 economic crisis. Dr Rawindaran has been a member of the academic staff of the Logistics and Operations Management Section of Cardiff Business School since October 2002.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) Green Day 2012, 1 February 2012

The event was launch by Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Aris Othman, Chairman of Malaysia Airports. MITRANS were represented by its postgraduates, including Hasmawati, Nur Farizan, Nurul Elma, Elmi Alif, Yantizpura.

The programme started with a 'doa' recital and welcome speech from Puan Ir. Suradini Abdul Ghani, General Manager Human Resource Services. This was followed with a speech from Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Aris.

The event continued with the launching of MAHB's newly enhanced Environmental Webpages and Fire Evacuation Procedures. This was followed by the Health and Safety Executive She Committee Certificate Presentation by Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Aris.

There was also a Walkathon, Tree Planting ceremony, Green Treasure Hunt, Fish release and a photo session which completed the day. All staff of MAHB were wearing green T- shirt during the event.

MITRANS had a booth at the event. Tours at exihibition booth started at 10.00am. Other goverment organizations such as GreenTech Malaysia, Department of Environment and also private company participate such Celcom, and Viola Water, Environment CFT, Potex, Medi Jaring, MAS.

The MITRANS booth was kept busy. Every visitor to the booth were given a bag containing postgraduates and MITRANS pamphlets. Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Aris himself toured the MITRANS Booth 12.30pm.

MAHB Green Day came to an end at 1.00pm.

Trade Facilitation Working Group Meeting, MOT HQ, Putrajaya , Blok D

Representatives from various ministries and industry stakeholders attended a 'Trade Facilitation Working Group Meeting' at the Ministry of Transport's (MOT) Putrajaya Headquarters earlier today. On the agenda were the continuing problem with the shortage of heavy vehicle drivers and licensing problems which were a hindrance or barrier to trade. Prof Madya Sabariah Muhammad (Former Director of MITRANS) updated the Working Group on her latest research on remuneration for heavy vehicle drivers. For the record, the meeting was chaired by En Mustapha Zainuddin (Secretary, Planning and Research Unit, MOT) and the delegation from MITRANS was led by Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut (Director of MITRANS).

High Speed Rail Feasibility Study Presentation, 31 January 2012

A delegation from MITRANS, led by Dr Intan Rohani Endut (Director of MITRANS), presented its proposal for a High Speed Rail (HSR) Feasibility Study to the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD). There are no pictures of the meeting as photography was prohibited.

A technical committee from SPAD were present to evaluate the proposal and also asked questions for the purposes of further clarifications. The MITRANS delegation was out in force for this presentation and even our very own Honourary Consultant, Dr Ir Md Yunus Ab Wahab (Technical Director of Dynatest Asia Pacific) attended the presentation.

MITRANS Visit to Prasarana's Subang HQ, 27 January 2012

MITRANS was invited to attend a meeting with Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) in order to work out areas of collaboration and cooperation. There are numerous aspects of human resource development which are of interest to both Prasarana and MITRANS. Much of the meeting was spent exploring what each party could offer to the other in order to reach a win-win relationship. A big thank you to Prasarana for its generosity and hospitality.

LPT Forum Follow-up Meeting After Industry Roundtable Talks

In the light of the successful industry roundtable talks on the setting up of the LPT Forum, MITRANS met with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) to discuss details of the launch of the actual statutory Land Public Transport Forum (LPT Forum). The launching o f the LPT Forum will take into account the industry feedback that was received during the PRE-launch roundtable talks held earlier at Sime Darby Convention Centre.

Industry Consultation on Maritime Passenger Liability Framework and Insurance Scheme, 20 January 2012

Recently, the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) conducted an industry feedback session on its proposed policy paper on passenger liability at sea and the accompanying insurance scheme to cover liability. The session was held at MIMA's lovely HQ at Megan Philleo Avenue, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, just off KLCC's Twin Towers.

The session was chaired by the new Director General of MIMA, Y. Bhg. Dato' Noor Aziz Yunan. Miss Amy Aai, a Research Fellow at MIMA who led the study, presented its preliminary findings. The floor was then open to members of industry to give feedback on the various points raised in the research paper. In keeping with tradition, MIMA's research work is through and well written, although further work now needs to be done after industry has had its say on the matter. Well done to Miss Amy and MIMA for a job well done.

Preparatory Meeting for Australia - Malaysia Round-Table Talks on Logistics

The aforementioned Round-Table Talks on Logistics will be taking place between the Governments of Malaysia and Australia in the near future. Today's meeting at the Ministry of Trade's (MITI) headquarters in Jalan Duta was to gather feedback on what should happen during the diplomatic exchange. The meeting was chaired by Tuan Muhammad Zulhilmi Ahmad, Principal Assistant Director, Services Sector Development Division, MITI. The delegation from MITRANS was led by its Director, Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut, and also consisted of Dr Harlina S Jaafar (Head of MARCELS) and Pn Azlina Muhammad (Research Fellow).

SPAD Commissioner Visits MITRANS to Discuss Strategic Alliance

Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Sadullah, a Commissioner with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), dropped by MITRANS for a lunch time meeting. In addition to being a Commissioner, Dr Ahmad Farhan is also a Professor in Transport Studies at the School of Civil Engineering (Universiti Sains Malaysia).

As SPAD's area of responsibility is freight logistics and passenger transport, this dovetails neatly into what MITRANS is also doing. MITRANS is also organised largely into two centres, i.e. MARCELS (for logistics, headed by Dr Harlina S. Jaafar) and Centre for Public Transport and Sustainable Development (for passenger transport, headed by Dr Siti Z. Ishak).

Round-table Talks on Land Public Transport Forum, Sime Darby Convention Centre, 9 January 2012

Prior to the official setting up of the Land Public Transport Forum (LPT Forum) under the Land Public Transport Act 2010, opportunity was given to consumers of public transport to give feedback on the type of forum that they wanted under the Act. The event was organised and hosted by MITRANS, with the support of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD). Among the issues discussed were the types of formalities and procedures that were to be adopted by the LPT Forum, the relationship between the LPT Forum and SPAD, as well as funding for the LPT Forum.

SPAD's Chairman, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Syed Hamid bin Syed Jaafar Albar kicked off the proceedings with a brief description of statutory aspects of the LPT Forum. Consumers of public transport were then given the freedom top give suggestions to SPAD on what they wanted from the LPT Forum. Moderating the proceedings was Assoc Prof Dr Sabariah Jemali, formerly Deputy Director of MITRANS, now seconded to the Malaysian Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI). Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut (Director of MITRANS) and Assoc Prof Sabariah Mohammad (former Director of MITRANS) contributed to the talks as participants of the round-table. All the views expressed at the talks were religiously recorded by a team of rapporteurs provided by MITRANS.

PM's Visit to Proton's HQ in Selangor, Saturday, 7 January 2011

Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the current Prime Minister of Malaysia graced a 'Meet the Stalwarts of Selangor Industry' hosted by Proton Holdings Berhad. MITRANS was invited to participate the event, which had a carnival atmosphere.

MITRANS had its usual booth and marketed its products and services in consultancy, research, training and postgraduate studies to members of industry. In particular, the brochures for the industrial Ph.D programme, ran out very quickly and was gone within an hour.

MITRANS was represented by its Director, Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut, as well as members of its Green Logistics Team (Hasmawati, Farizan and Bazla) and it Halal Logistics Team (Emmi and Bob). Thank you also the administrative staff (Irwan, Herman, Zailee and Suhaimi) who helped set up the booth the day before and packed up after the event.

SEM Workshop Using Amos Version 18, PTAR Computer Lab, 8-10 December 2011

MITRANS organised this workshop for its postgraduates in Logistics and Transport in order for them to acquire basic and advanced skills in SEM and usage of the latest software (AMOS, Version 18) for this purpose. The postgraduates were taught how to present the results in a professional manner and were given tips on how the software could be used to produce better journal articles for publication.

SEM is used to test ‘complex’ relationships between observed (measured) and unobserved (latent) variables and also relationships between two or more latent variables. Several fundamental concepts were introduced, including confirmatory factor analysis, causal models and measurement models, as well as model specification and assessment of model fit.

Associate Professor T. Ramayah was the facilitator for the workshop. He is currently working at Department of Production/Operations Management, School of Management, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He has taught courses in Statistics, Operations Management, Research Methods, Forecasting and Computer Literacy at undergraduate level. He has supervised numerous PhD/MA/MBA students in the fields of Information Systems, Operations Management, Marketing Management and Organizational Behaviour. He has also presented numerous papers at local and international conferences having won 3 ‘Best Papers” award. MITRANS at the Green Community Carnival Exhibition, 17 December 2011

As part of its MOU with the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), MITRANS sent members of its 'Green Logistics Team' (@ The Green Team) to set up an exhibition booth at Dewan Sri Sekinchan, Sg. Besar, Kuala Selangor. GreenTech helped the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) organise the event which commenced at 8.30 p.m. on a Saturday morning.

The delegation from MITRANS was led by Ph.D candidate Hasmawati bt Mat Hassan (@right-hand woman of 'Green Guru' Prof Ruslan) and also consisted of Nur Farizan Taruddin, Nur Bazla bt Mohmed Yusoff, Mohd Irwan Hakim b Zainal and Md Farid b Jaafar.

MITRANS was given a 20' x 20' canopy space to exhibit its research activities, consultancy projects and postgraduate opportunities. MITRANS paid a visit to the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) to make a presentation as part of its on going process to trying of achieve Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICOE) status. The delegation was led by Prof Ir Dr Hj Abdul Rahman Omar (Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, UiTM) who made the presentation on behalf of MITRANS. A journalist, Miss Bilqis Bahari, from the Business Times dropped by MITRANS to interview Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut (Director of MIRANS) and Assoc Prof Zakaria Ahmad (former director of MITRANS and current Senior Research Fellow for Sustainable Public Transport). Miss Bilqis was writing a feature on the problems faced by bus operators in Malaysia and needed expert advice from MITRANS. Also contributing to the meeting was Dr Siti Zaharah Ishak (Head, Centre for Sustainable Public Transport). Look out for the article which will appear in the Business Times soon. Visit of SPAD to MITRANS to Discuss Launch of LPT Forum, Friday 23 December 2011

The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), sent a delegation to MITRANS to discuss the setting up of the Land Public Transport Forum (LPT Forum). The delegation from SPAD was headed by En Fauzi Che Rus (Head of Organisation Support Division). He brought along representatives from the Legal Department and the Corporate Communications Office.

The LPT Forum is a statutory creature created under the Land Public Transport Act 2010. Its function is to provide a platform for industry stakeholders to give feedback to SPAD on matters concerning land public transport in Malaysia.

After the meeting, there is some chit-chat in the corridor outside the meeting room.

The delegation finally said goodbye and departed at 5 pm.

EU Grant Briefing, 22 December 2011, 3-5 pm, MITRANS Meeting Room

Dr Riaza Perveen Mohd Riaz (Private Grant and Contract Research) from the Research Management Institute conducted the seminar. MITRANS was told that the project must be headed by a European, with participants sourced from the developing world (e.g. Malaysia) and third world countries.

Participants have to pre-register with a database of expertise called CORDIS. Much of the remainder of the session was spent registering team members into this system. Thank you Dr Riaza for your patience and tremendous effort in getting us all on the right footing.

MITRANS shall be submitting two proposals for research. One based on green freight logistics, whilst the other will be based on sustainable public transport.

Capacity Building for Connectivity in BIMP-EAGA, 20 December 2011

Much of the meeting was dedicated to logistical planning for the hosting of a workshop on multimodal transport connectivity in the BIMP-EAGA region.

MITRANS organised the aforementioned workshop at the Tun Abdul Razak Library's Level One Computer Laboratory for its postgraduates. As the response was overwhelming, the course was also subsequently opened to participants from outside MITRANS. The course started at 8.30 am and concluded at 5 pm. The facilitator was Dr Ng Lee Luan, Senior Lecturer, Department of English Language, Faculty of Languages and Linguistic Building, University of Malaya.

HICOE Strategic Workshop at Klana Resort, Seremban, 2-4 December 2011

Just when you thought that MITRANS had reached the finishing line and was officially awarded Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICOE) status, that appears not to be the case as the institute has been asked to make another presentation on its sustainability, in particular accounts estimate and its ability to survive as an independent body outside the university structure. As MITRANS is the first body in Malaysia seeking HICOE status under the 'service thrust' category, no one is exactly sure what to do.

Hence, MITRANS once again roped in the help of its old friends from UiTM's Strategic Planning Unit to help out with the documents and presentation. On hand to render their assistance were Dr Ahmad Naqiyuddin Bakar (Head of Strategy Planning, Monitoring) and Assoc Prof Dr Azizan Abdullah (Head of Strategy Planning, Operations).

When the documents and slides were in a semi-finished state, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof Ir Dr Hj Abdul Rahman Omar, dropped by to have a look at the contents of the document. It was important for the learned professor to feel comfortable with the documents as ultimately, he will be making the presentation on behalf of MITRANS at the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

Benchmarking Study Tour of CILT Nigeria - Part (3), 1 December 2011

After the completion of the first phase of the bench-marking visit by the CILT delegation from Nigeria, the next phase consists of a study tour. In a very tight tour programme, study visits were planned to 3 places that were vital in the context of Malaysian logistics. The delegation hopped on a UiTM Bus and were soon on their way, accompanied by Pn Azlina Muhammad (MITRANS Research Fellow), Pn Azmin Faranaz (Acting Assistant Registrar, MITRANS) and yours truly.

The first place earmarked for a visit was the Ministry of Transport. Receiving the delegation at Putrajaya, was Mr Mano Verabathran (Head of Corporate Communications). In his team were various head of departments for the various modes of transport, i.e. land, sea and air. The ministry was very frank in their replies and very open in their sharing of information.

Here is a little sneak preview of what is to come in the world of electric vehicles (EV). Proton has sent a few units to various ministries for testing around Putrajaya. Here is a snapshot of an electric Saga at its charging station just outside the MOT building and a a sports EV just inside the building.

As the session with MOT finished close to lunch time, MITRANS arranged for the Nigerian CILT delegation to have lunch at Alamanda Shopping Mall at Putrajaya. Reservations were made at Penang Village Restaurant. The food was good, but the service was slow. It only later emerged that there was only one chef working the kitchen that day.

The next stop on the schedule was Mas Kargo's cargo handling facilities at KLIA, Sepang (situated just next to the Low Cost Carrier Terminal, LCCT). Security is rather strict and to get access, one has to obtain a pass using an identity card or passport. The security tag has to be worn on the wrist at all times whilst inside the restricted area. The delegation was received by En Muhammad Aniz Mohd Azmi (Controller of Public Affairs, Corporate Communications Department). The delegation was taken to a briefing room where En Mohd Yunus Idris (Senior Vice President of Global Sale and Government Affairs) welcomed the delegation. He then handed over the proceedings to En Abd Wahab Abu Bakar (Manager Outbound Business) who gave a talk on cargo operations in and around the complex. The delegation was then rewarded with a 'goodie box' that contained sandwiches and snacks as well as drinks. After a good munch, En Abd Wahab took the delegation on a tour around the cargo complex.

After the wonderful tour of the Mas Kargo complex, the delegation hopped back onto the bus and made its way to KL Sentral, which is Malaysia's premier integrated rail and bus terminal. At KL Sentral, KTMB's man in charge, S. Mahendran (Senior Operations Manager, Operations Department) greeted the CILT delegation from Nigeria. He gave a short talk on the operational aspects of running such a huge and complex system. The subsequent tour was a real treat as we were allowed into the command / control centre where members of public have no access to. In this room, the entire rail network is controlled and we also got to meet the 'voices' behind the multi-lingual announcements at the station.

Once the tour of KL Sentral had come to an end, the CILT delegation from Nigeria got on the UiTM bus and headed towards Shah Alam via the NPE. Whilst passing Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, a few delegates got off the bus for a shopping session. Top of the list was the iPad 2. The day ended when the bus dropped off the delegation at their hotel. There were thanks and goodbye from both sides.

The second day kicked off with a Professorial Lecture by Emeritus Professor M.O. Filani who spoke on the impact of the aviation sector on the economy in Nigeria.

Next on the menu was breakfast!

After breakfast, scheduled speaker was Datuk Dr Elias Kadir, the CEO of KTMB's Freight Division. His presentation was on the railway business in Malaysia and his vision on transforming the freight division to face future challenges.

The Nigerian delegation then had a networking lunch with Datuk Elias and his entourage.

The final session for the day was conducted by Mr Othman Rais, a principal consultant at ORAIS Consultancy Services. His company specialises in Ports and Logistics Management, OD and Change Management. He spoke on the changing trends in the maritime logistics sector.

After the presentation, there was networking between Mr Othman and members of the Nigerian CILT delegation.

This signalled the end of the seminar session for the visit. The next phase would involve the study tours of various industry stakeholders. Dr Ir Intan Rohani Endut, Director of MITRANS handed out certificates to the Nigerian CILT delegates.

As there was still time left in the day, MITRANS managed to squeeze into the schedule, a visit to Northport, Klang. En Hairul Rizal (Manager, Logistics Services, Northport) and Mr Justin Teoh Eu Gin (accounts Manager, Logistics Services) met the delegation upon its arrival at Northport. Both En Hairul and Mr Justin boarded the bus and two auxiliary police officers provided escort services in a police car. The delegation was taken on a tour of various operational aspects which were of importance to Northport. Here are the snapshots:

Later at night, MITRANS hosted a dinner in honour of the CILT delegation from Nigeria at Interkma Resort, UiTM's very own teaching hotel and resort. Also invited to the dinner were top ranking officials of Malaysia's Charter Institute of Malaysia (CILTM).

Benchmarking Study Tour of CILT Nigeria - Part (1), 29 November 2011

A delegation of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria arrived at MiTRANS for a bench-marking and study tour. The Nigerian delegation was led by Emeritus Professor M.O. Filani, President of the CILT Nigeria and Mr Francis A. Ehiguese, National Executive Director of CILT Nigeria.

The study and bench-marking tour kicked-off with a 'getting to know one another session' in the morning at the MOU Room on the ground floor of the new chancellery building.

This person is Nigerian, but he is not a part of the Nigerian CILT delegation . MITRANS' very own Nigerian and Post-Doctoral Fellow, Dr Zayyana Shehu.

After the 'getting to know one another session', the delegation had light breakfast and there was a short group photo session.

This was followed by a paper presentation by Assoc Prof Dr Sabariah Jemali on the regulatory framework for transport in Malaysia.

After presentation of the paper, the delegation were treated to lunch at the Chancellery Building's guest dining area.

During the lunch break, yours truly took the Nigerian delegation on a bus tour around the UiTM campus at Shah Alam. A special treat for the delegates was a visit to the 20th floor of the Twin Towers Building where the Medical Faculty was situated. A couple of flights of steps up from that floor, one gets to access the roof area. It provided a beautiful birds-eye view of the campus.

The second half of the seminar in the afternoon was reserved for an illustrious personality from Malaysia's transport and logistics industry. The Nigerian delegation had the pleasure of listening to Dr Amin Mohd Kassim, Deputy Managing Director of Century Logistics Holdings Bhd. The learned logistician spoke on the directions for logistics in Malaysia.

Upon completion of the session with Dr Amin, tea was served.

The last paper for the day was presented by Assoc Prof Dr Hj Mohd Fauzi, Director, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (MIROS). He spoke on the various initiatives to decrease the occurrences of accidents in Malaysia.
